Being a Cabin Leader at Camp Timber-lee is a hands-on leadership experience that goes far beyond a typical summer job. You’ll build meaningful, lasting relationships with campers and fellow staff, develop real-world leadership and communication skills, and grow personally and spiritually along the way. What a Cabin Leader Does


Cabin Leaders are the foundation of the camper experience at Timber-lee.

Cabin Leaders are responsible for the day-to-day care, leadership, and support of campers. You’re the consistent adult in their week—the one who helps campers feel welcome, included, and confident as they try new things and build friendships.


This role is a mix of:

  • Leading and supervising a cabin group
  • Creating a positive, safe, and fun environment
  • Supporting campers socially, emotionally, and spiritually
  • Working closely with other staff and camp leadership


Cabin Leaders play a major role in shaping the overall camp experience.

A Day in the Life

Mornings

  • Waking campers up and helping them get ready for the day

  • Managing cabin routines and responsibilities

  • Having small conversations that help campers feel seen and supported

  • Setting the emotional and relational tone for the entire day


Daytime

  • Moving with your cabin between activities and programs

  • Participating alongside campers and helping them try new things

  • Managing energy levels, behavior, and transitions

  • Laughing a lot, adapting on the fly, and keeping things fun and organized

Nighttime

  • Attending chapel and helping campers engage with faith in an approachable, relatable way—not pressured, but personal and real

  • Sitting with campers during worship and messages, answering questions, and modeling what an authentic faith looks like in everyday life

  • Leading cabin conversations and reflections at the end of the day, helping campers process what they experienced and learned

  • Creating space for honesty, curiosity, and connection—often when campers are most open and willing to talk


late night

  • Coach tired leaders through emotions

  • Help navigate conflict

  • Walk & talk in quiet trails

  • Pray together under real stars

These late-night moments help foster a positive culture and strengthen the organization at camp, creating an environment where growth and learning are valued. Camp counselors play a vital role as mentors and role models for campers, and their empathy is crucial for building trust and deeper connections.

“But Do I Really Have What It Takes?”

  • “Do I need prior experience?”

    No. Prior camp or childcare experience isn’t required. Cabin Leaders receive training before camp starts and ongoing support throughout the summer. You’ll learn practical skills like camper care, communication, conflict resolution, and leadership—so you’re never expected to just “figure it out” on your own.


  • “What if I’m new to leadership?”

    That’s okay—this role is designed for growth. Many Cabin Leaders step into leadership for the first time at Camp Timber-lee. You’ll be guided by experienced leadership, supported by your fellow staff, and given opportunities to practice leadership in real, meaningful ways. By the end of the summer, most staff are surprised by how much confidence they’ve gained.

  • “Do I need to be highly spiritual?”

    Short answer: you need a real, growing faith.


    You don’t have to have everything figured out or have all the right answers. What matters is that you’re confident in your faith and genuinely pursuing God. Camp is a supportive environment—you’re surrounded by people walking through similar questions, given daily time to connect with God, and supported through training, mentorship, and community.


    Many staff leave the summer with a deeper, more personal faith than when they started.

  • “Is this job hard?”

    Yes—at times. Camp days are full, emotions can run high, and the work requires patience and energy. But you’re never doing it alone. The role is manageable because of strong support systems, clear expectations, and a tight-knit staff community. Most Cabin Leaders will tell you the challenges are exactly what make the summer so meaningful and rewarding.

Cabin Leaders are the heartbeat of camp. You’re the one campers wake up with, laugh with, open up to, and trust. Years from now, when they talk about “that one summer,” there’s a good chance they’re talking about you.


As a Cabin Leader, your job isn’t to be perfect—it’s to be present. You set the tone in the mornings with conversations that matter. You jump into the chaos and laughter of the day. At night, you sit on bunks during cabin talks, answering real questions and creating space for moments that stick. And in the late hours, you’re there for homesick campers, deep conversations, and the kind of community that only forms when people do life together.


This role will stretch you—in the best way. You’ll grow in confidence, leadership, and faith as you learn how to care for others, handle responsibility, and show up even when you’re tired. You’ll be trained, supported, and surrounded by a staff that feels more like family than coworkers. You’re never doing this alone.

You don’t need to have faith all dialed in.


You just need to be open, willing, and ready to say yes to something meaningful.

You’ll start to notice what you’re good at. You’ll become more aware of where you still need to grow. And through training, support, and daily life at camp, you’ll learn how to lead from who you are—not who you think you’re supposed to be.


This role isn’t “churchy.” It’s real life, real relationships, and faith woven naturally into everyday moments. You’ll see what it looks like to live out faith in community—not just hear about it in a room.
