About Our Horsemanship Camp
For young riders in 6th through 8th grade who have a passion for horses or want to discover the joy of horseback riding, Camp Timber-lee's Horse Trainers program is the perfect adventure. Designed especially for beginners and intermediate riders, this immersive equestrian experience introduces campers to the fundamentals of horse care, riding, and ranch life. Set amidst the serene beauty of our sprawling campgrounds, the Horse Trainers program blends hands-on learning with unforgettable trail riding, bonding with animals, and developing lifelong skills.
A True Ranch Experience for Youth
The Horse Trainers program is not just about riding—it's about connecting with horses on a deeper level. Whether it's a calm, reliable gelding for a nervous beginner or a spirited mare for a more seasoned rider, every camper is matched thoughtfully to ensure safety and success.
Over the course of the week, campers will spend two to three hours per day in structured riding and horsemanship sessions. These sessions are broken down into skill-based segments, allowing campers to progress steadily and confidently. Instructors guide them through a comprehensive curriculum covering riding techniques, horse behavior, grooming, tack usage, feeding routines, and the essentials of stable management.

Building Riding Skills Step by Step
Western riding is the foundation of our program. Campers learn to mount and dismount safely, hold proper posture in the saddle, use reins with precision, and apply leg cues to communicate with their horse. As confidence grows, they'll learn to navigate patterns in the arena, execute smooth turns, and maintain control at various gaits, from walking to trotting.
But the journey doesn’t stop with Western styles. To give campers a well-rounded introduction to riding, our program also includes lessons in bareback and English riding. Bareback riding helps improve balance and strengthens core muscles, offering a new and exciting challenge for those who are ready. English riding introduces campers to a different style of tack and rider posture, giving them a broader view of equestrian disciplines.
Our supportive environment encourages campers to try new things without fear of failure. With small group sizes and personalized instruction, each camper receives the attention they need to thrive. Our goal is not only to build technical skills but also to foster a deep respect for these intelligent, sensitive animals.
